The Brave Union is an illustration and design studio led by husband-and-wife team Kevin and Kristen Howdeshell, based in Kansas City, Missouri.

Since the beginning of their practice, their work has focused on narrative-driven illustration, with an emphasis on children’s books, editorial storytelling, and visually rich educational content. Their style is characterized by bold compositions, textured color, and a playful, mid-century–influenced sensibility that balances clarity with warmth. Their illustrations often center on themes of nature, science, and imagination, transforming complex ideas into engaging, accessible visual narratives.
