Joanna Becker

Joanna Becker is a freelance illustrator and first-degree black belt originally from Fort Kent, Maine, and based in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. She graduated Summa Cum Laude from the Pennsylvania College of Art & Design with a BFA in Illustration and a minor in Art History, with a focused study in medieval art. During her time at PCA&D she completed a mentorship with artist Anthony Palumbo, made the Dean’s List every semester, and exhibited work at the PCA&D CORE Gallery. She was also profiled in Fig Magazine.

Her work draws from illuminated manuscripts, Gothic architecture, and scientific illustration, bringing a contemporary sensibility to ornamental and medieval forms. She has illustrated multiple children’s books, including The Circus Train, Mistakes Are A-Okay, Maggy Maye, and The Moth that Flew to the Moon, with projects beginning before she even received her diploma. She is also co-founder of Bushi and Brush, a Lancaster arts dojo where she teaches both martial and visual arts.
